Vincent Chong, Performance
As their alter ego Crystal Monkey (猴貴妃) the artist, Chinese calligrapher, seal engraver, and performer Vincent Chong offers a performance-based contribution to SUPER FLEX, reinscribing the calligraphic tradition of large-scale demonstrative performance with the radical legacy of Drag in a palimpsestic hybrid. Gracefully flowing down the cobblestones of Wentworth Place, Chong’s work nods to the sociality of the street’s legacy businesses, including nightclubs, beauty salons, and sign printing companies. A trained calligrapher with a long history organizing Queer nightlife, Chong as Crystal Monkey is proof that resonant, if not harmonious hybridity is possible - they fulfill both cultures’ desire to archive the fleetingness and impermanence of shared experiences, remembering both their calligraphic ancestors and their Queer and Trans chosen family.
About Vincent Chong
Vincent Chong (莊志明) is a Queer mixed-race Chinese-American artist, Chinese calligrapher, seal engraver, and performance artist. They will receive their MFA in Art Practice from Stanford University (2026), and hold a BFA in Fine Art and BA in Mathematics from Cornell University. They are a student of Taipei-based calligrapher Wu Wensheng, and in NY, developed their work alongside Bushwick’s Queer and drag nightlife performers and NY’s dance community. They’ve exhibited at Seizan NYC, Co-Prosperity, Armature Projects, Lehman College, La MaMa, SoMad, Skånes Konstförening, Center for Book Arts, Museum of Chinese in America, Site Brooklyn, PAAM. Performances include Metropolitan Museum of Art, 100 Hinsdale, Hole Pics NYC, Columbus Park, Center for Performance Research, QNA, Inter Arts Center, MoMA PS1, Abrons Art Center, Movement Research at Judson Church, Abrons Art Center. Awards include Stanford Graduate East Asian Summer Grant, Brooklyn Arts Council Creative Equations Fund, BAC Su-Casa, NYFA/NYSCA fellowship, among others.

莊志明集藝術家、中國書法家、印章雕刻師和表演者於一身，以其另一個自我「猴貴妃」之姿，為「蓄勢待發」展帶來一段演出。Ta們在新的背景底下重現書法傳統裡的大型創作表演，猶如臨摹，揉合酷兒變裝秀之激進傳統。莊氏的作品優雅地在德和街的石鋪路面上流轉，向落戶該處的多家老字號（legacy business）致意，包括夜店、美容店、招牌印刷公司等。莊氏研習書法多年，亦長期策劃酷兒夜生活，其「猴貴妃」的身份正是兩者互有共鳴，甚至可以和諧共存的例證——既滿足這兩個傳統紀錄稍縱即逝、無法長久的共同經驗之慾望，同時追念各位書法前輩，以及其酷兒與跨性別者組成的再生家庭
