V. "Valhalla" Vale, Bookshop

Since the 1970’s, V. Vale has maintained his status as a legend of countercultural publishing, from his founding of Search and Destroy, the first punk tabloid in San Francisco, to his tireless efforts publishing as RE/Search, a vital wealthspring of zines and books covering ground from foundational interviews with authors including William Burroughs and musicians such as Genesis P-Orridge, to Modern Primitives, which introduced body-piercing, tattooing and scarification to a wider audience. Cultivating the vibrant shadow selves and alternative practices that have long terrorized the imagination of normative society, Vale’s myriad alter egos as a publisher belie the lifetime of care he has spent on his maelstrom of interests.

At a special, festival-exclusive edition of his iconic vending table, Vale himself will preside over a selection of rare publications from his early years in the zeitgeist, alongside staples of the RE/Search back catalog.

V. "Valhalla" Vale (b. 1944) is an influential American editor, writer, interviewer, and musician, notably as the keyboardist for the early formation of Blue Cheer. He is the founder and primary contributor to RE/Search Publications, known for its focus on counterculture, underground music, and provocative topics. A third-generation Japanese American born at the Jerome War Relocation Center, Vale grew up in California and earned a BA in English Literature from UC Berkeley. Moving to San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury in 1966, he became active in the underground scene, publishing the punk-focused zine Search and Destroy in 1977 and founding RE/Search in 1980 with backing from notable figures like Ginsberg and Ferlinghetti. His work expanded from zines to academically styled books on subjects including industrial culture, obscure music, and modern primitives. Vale’s writings and talks explore countercultural ideas, emphasizing the pursuit of lasting knowledge. He continues to influence indie publishing and underground culture.
