Tiffany Sia / Speculative Place, Alex Nguyen-Vo
Tiffany Sia’s Speculative Place is a living-dead space. Originally founded in Hong Kong, now re-emerged as an artist-run project, Speculative Place endures in printed form, on the web, and in occasional performances, workshops and talks. For the festival, Speculative Place reanimates itself as an undead residency, bringing together thinkers and artists around San Francisco Chinatown’s psychogeographies of media and memory.
About Tiffany Sia
Tiffany Sia is an artist, filmmaker, and writer. Tiffany’s multidisciplinary practice materializes across films, video sculptures, artist books, scholarly essays - confronting questions about the representation of place, memory and the imaginaries of exceptional and irregular polities beyond the national. Her films screened at TIFF Toronto International Film Festival, NY Film Festival, MoMA Doc Fortnight, and elsewhere. She has had solo exhibitions at Artists Space, NY; Maxwell Graham Gallery, New York; and Felix Gaudlitz, Vienna. Tiffany is author of On and Off-Screen Imaginaries (Primary Information, 2024), essays that make a case for fugitive, exilic cinema. She has exhibited at MoMA, NY; Fondazione Prada, Milan; Seoul Museum of Art, and elsewhere. Her essays are in Film Quarterly, October, and more. The recipient of the Baloise Art Prize in 2024, Tiffany has given talks at Dia Art Foundation, Stanford University, Yale University, and has taught at Cooper Union.
Alex Nguyen-Vo works in painting, sculpture, and video. He received his MFA from University of Pennsylvania and BFA from University of Houston. Alex has had solo exhibitions at Deli Gallery, New York; Fjord Space, Philadelphia; Hidrante, San Juan; and group exhibitions at Team Titanic, Berlin; Torrance Art Museum; Julius Caesar, Chicago; Beverly’s, New York; Vox Populi, Philadelphia.
Alex approaches painting as a space of visual and historical entanglement. Drawing from French Impressionism, anime stills, riot footage, import car magazines, and vacation snapshots, he montages digital fragments into textured, painterly compositions. His practice probes the authority of painting by amplifying its pleasures, such as gesture, color, and texture, while satirizing the cultural legacies embedded in its forms. Humor, exaggeration, and artifice function in his work as tools of critique, rendering familiar images strange and seductive surfaces suspect.
