Robyn Mallery, Shakin', Awaken & Chinatown Mirage
Shakin’, Awaken is a small glass bottle with colorful liquid that reacts to movement. This work reflects the heart of SUPER FLEX—our hidden, alter versions of ourselves being shaken to the surface. What is shaking you? Who is being revealed in this moment? The colors are rising to the surface, you are encouraged to express them.
This work was greatly supported by the contributions of Elaine Fong.
Chinatown Mirage is a 5-card set of tarot cards created to reflect the “alter egos” of the alleys and streets they represent. Each of the five cards holds the stories of one of the four streets of SUPER FLEX—Grant Avenue, Ross Alley, Wentworth Place, and Waverly Place—with the final card representing Edge on the Square.
A mirage is a natural illusion that creates a displaced image of distant objects or the sky due to light rays bending in the atmosphere. What can you see of Chinatown's past? Of its future? Of its present? As you travel to each street, take a moment to honor the stories, the people, and the lives that were lived here. Step into their shoes for just a moment and imagine who you might be.
