About

Edge on the Square, in collaboration with the Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco, presents its 2026 Lunar New Year program on February 14 and 15 at 800 Grant Avenue, as part of the Art Zone at the Chinatown Flower Market Fair, with activities located at both the 600 block of Grant Avenue and 800 Grant Avenue.

This year’s Art Zone theme is “Make Your Own Luck” (築好運). Drawing on Lunar New Year traditions—rituals meant to ward off harm and invite abundance—Edge on the Square highlights art as a form of cultural storytelling, collective care, and the creative power to shape our own fortune. The program features Dragon's Beard candy demonstration and samples by Dragon Papa and a red envelope arts workshop by Jade Wu.

Edge on the Square will host two artists for this weekend of festivities:

Dragon Papa

Dragon's Beard Candy, a 2,000-year-old artisan Chinese dessert, traces its origins back to the Han Dynasty, where it was served to Chinese royalty. Its name is derived from the thin, feathery threads that cling to the chin when consumed, resembling a dragon's beard. Derek Tam, self-proclaimed Dragon Papa, is one of the last candy-makers in the Bay Area who continues to preserve the traditional hand-making process of Dragon Beard's candy, which involves stretching a dough-like sugary mixture into small, thin strands. A fifth generation candy maker in San Francisco's Chinatown, Derek will be demonstrating the process of making this intricate candy, and will also have samples available for sale.

Jade Wu

Jade Wu (伍玉珍) is a recognized artist specializing in red-envelope art, an awardee of the Creative Red Envelope Lantern and Fans Competition Champion and Outstanding Overseas Chinese Honoree. Her work includes community-centered teaching, offering red-envelope art workshops at schools and senior centers, and designing annual Lunar New Year decorations for the California State Building. For Edge on the Square’s 2026 Lunar New Year Celebration, Jade will be hosting a red envelope arts workshop, where participants can create their own paper animal charms for well wishes in the new year. In the spirit of this year’s zodiac animal, the horse, Jade will be creating a special Year of the Horse paper charm.
