Taro Hattori, Rolling Counterpoint
Taro Hattori’s Rolling Counterpoint is a space for encounters designed to foster public dialogue about notions of division and belonging in contemporary society. Centered around a teahouse structure on a trailer hitched into a location, we will create a space for people to have on-going conversations about our everyday experiences of the current condition. Our conversation will start around one question about alter egos and shadow selves in our current cultural context. The question considers the specific challenges faced by the festival visitors, inspired by the project’s primary inquiries: What divides us? and What does it mean to belong?
On the tables around the teahouse, artistically printed paper with a question will be provided to visitors so that they may write out their answer if preferred. The artist and assistants will engage in conversations with visitors, and if the visitors choose, they will be invited into the teahouse to have a conversation and have tea with the artist Taro Hattori. Hattori collaborated with local Chinatown tea shops to present their tea leaves, traditional tea practice and related rituals. The contributors (visitors) may also adhere the paper on the teahouse to display and share their reflections.
Rolling Counterpoint was made possible by generous support of Lucas Artists Program at Montalvo Arts Center. The mobile teahouse was designed in collaboration with an architect Koji Saida at Saida and Sullivan Design Partners, Inc.

Taro Hattori
流動茶居與 Saida and Sullivan Design Partners, Inc. 建築師 Koji Saida 合作設計。
